Festivals in Africa

Africa is commonly called the festival continent. Colored and dynamic, ranging from music festivals across religious, cultural and harvest festivals to name only a few are celebrated across the continent. The festivals in Africa can be divided according to the country.

In Ghana, festivals are celebrated, with tribal leaders and the queen mother on decorated palanquins, shaded by traditional umbrellas, and drums and ancient warriors. Dates of many festivals are determined by the traditional calendars. Aboakyir festival celebrated each year during the month of May is mainly celebrated by the people of Winneba Simpa or in the central region of Ghana. The festival is celebrated to mark the migration of these people from the former Empire west of Sudan. In the festival a young member of the royal family is sacrificed each year for their god.

Panafest festival is a biennial, once celebrated on July 23 and 1

August 2007. This is the festival of African dance, music and other performing arts, which takes place every two years in Ghana.

The Homowo Festival celebrated in August or September to mark the beginning of the harvest season to ridicule hunger. The word Homowo in Africa means 'making fun of hunger. Hogbetsotso Festival is one of the famous festivals in Africa celebrated on the first Saturday of November each year by the Anlo sheep of the Volta region of Ghana. Generally known as Day Exodus le festival, it is held annually to honor the escape of the Anlo sheep of the tyrannical rule of Notsie - Agokoli Togo. The heads receive the tribute of their subjects and the celebration is laced with non-stop drumming and dance.

International Camel Derby & Festival is a famous festivals celebrated in Africa in August. The Derby is held in Maralal, Samburu district of Kenya is a spectacular festival packed with a variety of events that attracts visitors from all over the world. Since 1990, the derby has attracted entries from Australia, America, New Zealand, Canada, England, France, Spain, Japan, South Africa and they compete against Kenya in the two champions and amateurs professional courses. The route passes through the semi-desert regions with different levels of complexity and camels with or without handling can be rented for those who wish to compete.

Nairobi International Book Fair focuses on locally published books and magazines, and also draws the attention of publishers elsewhere in Africa and elsewhere overseas to attract 20000 visitors, including schools. The book fair provides a platform for marketing and promoting books in Africa and other parts of the world and aims to promote books signatures, book-reading, book launches and a programme of seminars.

Mombasa Carnival held in November features parades of floats and every possible cultural, national and religious group in Kenya. There are two major parades which feature incredible floats; spectacular costumes and fantastic music converge on Moi Avenue.

Egyptian Marathon is an international event where almost 36 nationalities participate and is the only marathon certified by the AIMS (International Association of marathons and road races) in the country.

South Africa Celebrates Augrabies Extreme Maraton, Hermanus Whale Festival and the National Arts Festival. Woodstock is South Africa’s Premier Youth Music Festival and the lifestyle is rock, pop, hip hop, contemporary and acts in South Africa featuring some of SA’s sports and entertainment sports stunt men.
